Libby Langdon's Ideas for Entertaining in a Small Space with Big Style

Double Duty Dining Table - In a small space sometimes there's not enough space for a Dining table AND a cocktail table but don't let that stop you from entertaining! Buy a large coffee table, it can be square, rectangular or round - just make sure that the legs SCREW into the tabletop.

Find a local woodworker or contractor to make you four longer legs that will also screw into the coffee table top at the standard dining table height 29" - 30" high. When you use the longer legs you turn your coffee table into a dining table, buffet or bar. When you use the shorter legs you can use the table during a cocktail party, watching football and playing board games. You can also throw some floor cushions around the lower table version and host an Asian or Moroccan feast!

Souped-up Serving Pieces
- When storage space is at a minimum you don't have room for all different types of glasses, serving pieces, platters, vases and so on, but you just need to see the unusual in everyday pieces. Pick a few simple items made out of clear glass and mix and match with what you already have.

A tall glass cylinder can be a vase, a hurricane for a pillar candle, a "modern punch bowl" with a ladle for mixed drinks or used to display for seasonal items like fruit or pinecones. Martini glasses are fun for cocktails but they are also great to serve nuts and olives in on a cheese platter, or fill it with dip and nestle it in your crudités tray. Fill tall drinking glasses one third up with berries or colored jellybeans and nestle a votive candle inside.

Mirror Magic
- This is a great tip for entertaining in Small Spaces but also just for living in smaller spaces in general. Mirrors are wonderful for extending a room and making it feel more open, they are also fantastic for adding natural light during the day and reflecting candlelight at night. You can maximize the impact by positioning a LARGE mirror, (don't worry if you have a tiny room...a big mirror will make it look so much BIGGER) on a wall directly opposite a window or a glass door, your space will instantly feel larger. Don't stop with Mirrors on your wall, find 12" x 12" mirrored squares at your local home improvement store and set them on your table or buffet. Set four to six votive candles on each mirrored square and you'll create a warm, inviting glow for your guests to enjoy!

Create Conversation Clusters
- Some people with less space feel that they shouldn't entertain because they don't have a huge sofa or tons of seating, well, I always ask people "when do you ever see 3 or 4 people sitting on a sofa at one time?" The answer is always "Never".

Don't think of your space as small think of it as "intimate", think about the ease with which conversation will flow and people will meet new friends in a smaller room. You can encourage this by creating what I call "conversation clusters", areas for 3 or 4 people to chat scattered throughout your space, these clusters include people sitting and people standing.

For the people standing together make sure there is a spot to set a drink down, near the bar, window or buffet table. The seating can be anything from a sofa flanked by chairs on either side, it can be two ottomans placed in front of a coffee table, it can be two chairs and an ottoman together or even some great big floor pillows in front of a fire place or coffee table.

It's unusual in a small or large space that everyone at a party sits, it's actually the opposite...they always stand! Go for it, invite the people you want to spend time with, chances are they'll go home thinking about how much fun they had instead of what a small place you have!

Unfussy and Fabulous Décor
- One of the easiest mistakes to make when decorating for a party in a small space is to get carried away with ideas and over-decorate your space. You don't want the room to look cluttered or fussy, it will just make it seem smaller.

You can adapt your room subtly and easily by drawing attention to interesting areas such as windows and pretty corners of the room by placing candles and small pots of flowers or plants on windowsills and "forgotten" areas. Make several small arrangements of flowers in one color to spread around your space (white is always an elegant, easy choice and they look incredible with lots of candle light).

You can mix all different types of flowers, but by keeping the color consistent you'll create a more cohesive look. For hits of color choose a bright scarf to use as a table runner, or a piece of fabric you love as a tablecloth. Use lots of candles but display them together in groups throughout your space, again keep them all the same color.

Desk-to-Dining
- If you're one of those hard working folks who has a home office and not room for much else, you can still create a space for friends to come, eat, drink and be merry! Find a small-scale dining table with wooden legs and attach locking casters to the bottom of the legs.

During the week this can be your desk, near computer equipment files and paperwork. But during the weekend stash your desk work into sturdy leather file boxes, roll your desk into the middle of the room, decorate it with flowers and candles and kick up your heels! The file boxes can be stacked and used as a spot for someone to rest a drink or place a small flower arrangement.
